Role Overview
The Client Services Director (CSD) will play a key leadership role within the organisation, responsible for overseeing a business unit that drives both strategic growth and operational excellence. Reporting to the Vice President of Medical Communications, this individual will be tasked with managing a significant portfolio of accounts, leading a team, ensuring financial accountability, and fostering strong client relationships. This role is ideal for someone with experience in a medical communications agency and a passion for driving innovation in healthcare.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Client Leadership

  2. Provide strategic direction and leadership to account teams, ensuring the delivery of high-quality service and identifying growth opportunities.

  3. Anticipate and address client concerns proactively.

  4. Work in partnership with scientific team leaders to optimise workflow and ensure effective day-to-day management.

  5. Represent the company to clients, negotiating and pushing back where needed to ensure alignment with strategic goals.

  6. Conduct regular client health checks and drive accounts forward, continually identifying areas for improvement.

  7. Financial Management

  8. Oversee the financial performance of the business unit, including accurate forecasting, utilisation of RAG, and optimisation of KPIs.

  9. Monitor and drive financial performance in partnership with the agency leadership team, ensuring financial goals are met.

  10. Manage business unit budgets, forecasts, and contribute to the yearly budgeting cycle.

  11. Align and track agency MSAs, terms of practice, and pricing, collaborating with internal teams for cost negotiations.

  12. Business Growth and New Business Development

  13. Partner with the business development team to identify and track new business opportunities, driving agency growth.

  14. Lead and execute account plans to ensure organic growth and longevity across accounts.

  15. Take ownership of new business pitches, overseeing content development, rehearsals, and pitch presentations.

  16. Collaborate with the broader team to generate proposals and increase wallet share across different business areas.

  17. Team Management

  18. Lead and motivate the business unit team in partnership with scientific co-leads.

  19. Manage and mentor line reports, setting clear objectives and conducting regular performance reviews.

  20. Implement processes and tools to increase team efficiency and contribute to overall operational success.

  21. Support resource planning and headcount needs in collaboration with business unit leads and VP, ensuring optimal team structures.

Experience & Skills Required

  • Experience:

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in a full-service medical communications agency.

  • Proven track record in managing client accounts, financial performance, and leading teams to success.

  • Prior experience with a global healthcare brand or in a similar client services role is highly desirable.

  • Education:

  • A degree in life sciences (Master’s or PhD preferred) or other relevant qualifications.

  • Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.

  • Visionary leadership with the ability to motivate teams and drive business outcomes.

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.

  • Strong financial acumen and experience in forecasting, budgeting, and managing financial performance.

  • Exceptional organisational skills, with attention to detail and the ability to prioritise effectively.

  • Complex problem-solving and strategic thinking.

  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
