Position Summary

The Medical Director, Ophthalmology will play a critical role in shaping and executing our ophthalmology strategy, serving as part of the Core Team. This position involves leading the clinical and medical aspects of the Phase 3 program, as well as managing the medical components of the submission, approval, and commercialization for the treatment of geographic atrophy. The role requires a seasoned professional with deep expertise in ophthalmology and drug development, strong leadership skills, and a proven track record of bringing innovative therapies to market. The Medical Director, Ophthalmology will work closely with the VP, Ophthalmology – Clinical Development. This role demands a deep-rooted commitment to serving patients and a passion for transforming the lives of people with serious diseases and their families.

Key Responsibilities

Drug Development:

  • Lead medical and clinical oversight of the Phase 3 program, including medical monitoring, data review and interpretation, and site communication.
  • Ensure the integrity and quality of abstracts, manuscripts, study reports, regulatory communications, and documents, and site or safety communications in collaboration with pharmacovigilance.
  • Identify core objectives for the design and implementation of clinical development strategy and protocols to support the development, registration, and commercialization.
  • Use scientific and clinical expertise to guide decision-making and optimize study design and execution.
  • Collaborate with Medical Affairs for KOL engagement, Advisory Committee interactions, and Steering Team meetings.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Foster strong collaboration across R&D, clinical development, regulatory affairs, commercial, and other relevant departments.
  • Serve as a key liaison between the ophthalmology team and executive leadership, providing regular updates on portfolio progress and strategic initiatives.
  • Cultivate a culture of teamwork, innovation, and accountability within the ophthalmology organization.

Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in life sciences, pharmacy, medicine, or related field. Medical Degree with subspecialty training and practice in Ophthalmology, Retina, or a related field is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, focusing on ophthalmology drug development.
  • Proven track record of leadership in ophthalmology, including successful development and commercialization of ophthalmology products.
  • In-depth understanding of ophthalmic diseases, drug development processes, and regulatory requirements.

Compensation:

  • The anticipated starting salary range for the Medical Director, Ophthalmology position is $269,000 – $299,000 per year.
  • The anticipated starting salary range for the Senior Medical Director, Ophthalmology position is $320,000 – $355,000 per year.
  • The anticipated starting salary range for the Executive Medical Director, Ophthalmology position is $340,000 – $378,000 per year.
  • The starting salary will be determined based on the candidate’s education, experience, transferable skills, licenses/certifications, and location, and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. The starting salary does not include other potential components of the total compensation package, such as bonuses, equity, employer-provided benefits, and perks.
